Slight increase to 355 playouts per second (1 thread, 61 stones per playout on average)
Which board size?

You must be doing something very wrong.

Re: playouts

I have just run a benchmark, and Crazy Stone does 4366.81 simulations per second on 19x19, from the empty starting position (Ryzen 7 5800X). This is with patterns and many advanced heuristics. So yes, your playouts are slow. Without heuristics, it may be around 10k per second. You must be doing some...

Re: opening book?

Starting from varied positions is important. Two games should be played from each starting position (swapping colors). If you maximize territory, then completely random positions are OK. Otherwise, if you maximize the probability of winning, then you should try to somehow select positions that are b...

Re: automated testing

Self-play is better than nothing if you have no opponents close to your strength. I did it a lot with Crazy Stone.

Re: opening book?

The only standardised format for Go is SGF. I am not aware of a standard way of hashing a Go board. Here is the 9x9 opening book I computed with Crazy Stone: https://www.crazy-sensei.com/book/go_9x9/ It handles transpositions into symmetries or rotations of the board. For this I needed a hash code t...

Re: automated testing

I recommend reading the Chess Programming Wiki: https://www.chessprogramming.org/Match_Statistics In particular, early stopping with SPRT is an important idea. If more than two programs are playing, then a statistical model such as Elo is useful. But I don't like it much because the Elo model makes ...

Re: final_score taking ages?

If the position is simple to analyze, then GNU Go will score it rapidly. If it has to run some complex search in order to determine the life status of a group, then it may take a while.
