Self-play is better than nothing if you have no opponents close to your strength. I did it a lot with Crazy Stone.

The only standardised format for Go is SGF. I am not aware of a standard way of hashing a Go board. If the position is simple to analyze, then GNU Go will score it rapidly. If it has to run some complex search in order to determine the life status of a group, then it may take a while.
