The Game-AI Forum is back!

Post by Rémi Coulom »

Hi,

I have just resurrected this forum. It had died out of inactivity a few years ago. But I want to give it another chance.

Please share the news, and don't hesitate to register and participate.

Well, looks interesting. I'm not a developer of any AI, but as a Go player am interested in the advancements of Crazy Stone as well as in the general techniques of the field.

Hope this turns into an flourishing forum. :)

Hello there, i couldn't find any "presentation" section, or really any section for passerby, just wanted to tchat i guess. I'm a bit nostalgic of old days internet, when it was so .. alive. I'm interested in neural networks and general purpose solvers, but not very knowledgeable and with a very poor background in mathematics. I tried to grasp the very most basic stuff. Apparently a modern "neural network" is a collection of linear functions, with a few arbitrary non linearity thrown into the mix. Then there are a lot of "architectural" tricks, like the convolutions, although as far as i could tell nobody knows if it is the right way to go about it. It just work okay enough. Reminds me of alchemy, more than science and technology.

I tried to read a bit about neural networks (biological), how butterfly process smell, and the like. I'm not sure i understand, but it is intriguing. I did write a quick MCTS 9x9 go implementation back in the days of the heroic deed of UCT. I have a few ideas i have lately been testing around to further my understanding, i really don't know where that will lead. It's very hard to have any hope of achieving anything with just a one man team, and an iris 655 fanless cooled processor. I'm probably autistic, or anyway wired in non conventional fashion. Maybe i'm a bit schizophrenic or something, nothing disabling, but enough to see the world from a different perspective. Communication has been hard, i tried for years, and finally settled into a very very narrow social circle. I'm just not good a connecting with most people.

Anyway, just felt like i would adhere to this forum, and say hello.

Hi Daur,

Welcome to the forum.

This place has not been very alive for a while. If you wish to exchange with other Go programmers, I recommend the computer-go mailing list. Its activity has been very limited in the recent past, but many Go programmers are still reading it. The Computer Chess Club also has an active forum for technical discussions: http://talkchess.com/forum3/viewforum.php?f=7

Thanks Remi. Actually the fact that the forum is mostly dead, maybe is exactly what i need right now. A place to exist. A fireplace to gather around, and share ideas and old war stories. I don't know you, that well, but you have been a recurring distant internet figure in my life. I believe this forum is a place you created for sharing your ideas (and knowledge), and also in the hope that some others would find value in them, and could share theirs. i need a place to try to do the same thing, hopefully that's exactly the right place to try it.

I shared an idea i had tested once on the computer-go mailing list. It was not very bright, but it was decent enough, i guess. I did test it a bit, and it seemed to be promising. Then a few month later a paper came out, using my idea as their thesis main contribution. Apparently they didn't really manage to make it work, so i guess all is right in the end. It was (maybe) just another useless one (although i'm still not convinced, never took the time to really bother. I shared it because i was too lazy to try hard at poking at it, after all). Still that made me wonder and ponder the meaning of it all. I don't know the in and out, i was just another schizophrenic random dude behind my screen. I'm jobless obviously, having tried to work and found it madening. This world seem to be really crazy, saying something, and doing the exact opposite, with everyone content about it all. I really wonder how you feel about AlphaStar. I mean you probably feel like it's all right, that it was hard work from those guys that just paid off. But to me, with the very partial picture i have, it seems that you played a damn vital role in it happening. I remember how you felt that CrazyStone wasn't that good back in the days, after the first UCT revolution, and your move prediction scheme trained on pro games didn't yield has much as you had hoped for.

It seems to me alpha-go is really YOUR child. You nurtured a generation. You almost built the whole damn thing, although of course a lot of people have worked hard to make it happen, i don't say that you could have done it alone. I just feel that to me you damn look like a modern hero. like Feynman. And nobody seems to realize it, not probably even you (although i really don't know about that). But having seen this all from my small window, i really wonder about the true value of sharing ideas in a world where we are made to only care about fame and money. I don't need fame. I don't need more money than i already have really (which is about none). Although it would be nice to buy a house for my girlfriend. Even if i bought a bigger computer, i wouldn't be able to use it. I move around a few times a month, and am happy with bringing along my lightweight fanless computing workhorse with me. Also i would probably spend too much energy making cuda works. I just want to have fun.

I have long dreamed of having an idea that would work, and sharing it. Or just having ideas that are fun, and sharing them. But i'm really afraid at them being used to fuel a world i despise, if any of them had value (which hopefully won't happen). I hate that google solved the protein folding problem (or so they claim), even though i'm happy that science is moving forward. I want a world where scientists and nutcase alike can share ideas around a beer (without alcool). To me you are a scientist, a true genius of modern times, maybe not the greatest, but one of those few nevertheless. From your point of view you would just be another ordinary guy i suppose, because you are your own norm. Me, i'm the nutcase. I'm the king's fool, not too sure that me lurking around here, making random post or (hopefully one day) sharing a demo or two is the right call. But hey, i won't do much in my life alone. I realize that, even if someday i finally have a crazy good idea, and it does work, it won't do much if i can't share, discuss and confront, and work with peers. Less crazy than me peers.
